The Great American Art Fair Weekend: July 11-13

I surely hope you were out and about this past weekend at one of the nation’s art fairs. It is such a pleasure to report some good news. Where you should have been:

Madison, WI

Madison, WI

  • Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, State College, PA
  • Art Fair on/off the Square, Madison, WI
  • Cain Park Art Festival, Cleveland, Hts.
  • Krasl Art Fair, St. Joseph, MI
  • more

These are all terrific venues. It surely would be great for artists if they didn’t all fall on the same weekend. Additionally, there is only one game in town next weekend, Ann Arbor. Artists would love it if one of these are fairs would be brave and step away from this weekend and hold it the following weekend.

Here are the reports:

Corn Hill Art Festival, Rochester, NY:

NO DOGS: And here is why artists prefer not to have dogs at art festivals, in Bloomington, IL, what did the press cover? You got it, the dogs that were attending the festival! Dogs Behaving Well Add to Owners Fun at the Art Festival. Sigh.

Art Fair On/Off the Square in Madison, WI, celebrated its 50th Anniversary this weekend. But there are concerns this year about how the current economic climate is impacting the event and the exhibiting artists.

Art Fair on the Square is an important event for the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMOCA) as a quarter of its annual budget comes from money raised over the weekend.

Or, you could have been in Plymouth, MI, at the popular Art in the Park. Here is an excellent blog by an art fair goer with photos and commentary on the art, the people (fat), the food, and the beautiful weather.

Lucky me, I also got to attend an art fair, on the bluffs of Lake Michigan in St. Joseph, MI, the Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff. It was bustling, people were carrying packages, a beautiful day. Here are a few more details:

My friend, Sara Shambarger, does a great job putting on this art fair for the Krasl Art Center each summer. Congratulations on another beautiful event, Sara! Wish I had had time to visit the VIP hospitality center but I was too busy shopping.

It was a pleasure to see that an old friend, Gene Brown from West Des Moines, IA, was the poster boy with his new body of distinctive paintings.

Here is another report from another serious shopper, Tommy the Material Girl:
